I have
commented several times that my biggest challenge when it comes to packing is
to prepare my suitcase for cold. My techniques to effectively pack a carry on
only seem to work for temperate climates. These days I will leave my sunny
Miami to head towards possible freezing temperatures and I do not want to have
to check my suitcase. It is my challenge for this occasion.
As I
mentioned earlier, it is very likely that I will be heading towards freezing
temperatures - not counting the wind factor. Although, who knows, he could
suddenly face an unusual warm-up in Canada (unlikely in February). A good hat
or breathable
cap may be the key to not freezing in transit, say from the lobby to
the taxi to the restaurant, instead of loading the 20 layers, padded coat and
three scarves.
To keep my
head from freezing, I use what I call an ear gear, or ear blanket, which good
friends from Quebec gave me when I went to the Winter Carnival. Of cold they do
know. The fleece material covers the front and back of the neck, my coat has
hood, so the top of my head is also protected.
My overall
footwear poses a challenge because I'm practically girl-sized with fox
fur boots. But over time I have managed to get snow boots and possible
ice that I can find. Unfortunately having the right footwear requires space and
size. My personal tip is to wear this garment on the plane, even though in
Miami it is 80 degrees, my snow boots are mounted with me to save space in my
carry on.
The era of
wool gloves passed. Ideal gloves should be warm, waterproof and lightweight, so
they take up little space in your bundles and much less in your pockets when
you have to remove them. These tips are ones I have to adopt. Although it will
not even occur to me to make snowballs, gloves like these are worthy of
consideration. Although my rabbit fur gloves Mr. Backpack gift are sensational.
